Early Childhood Education Extension Program

These extension courses are tailored to fit the needs of working adults and lifelong learners, with open enrollment and online learning. This is an excellent opportunity for current or aspiring preschool educators to meet other passionate educators in the Jewish setting from around the country virtually.

Course Offering Information for Summer 2024
Summer 2024 Semester Dates: June 3 – July 29, 2024
All classes will begin on Tuesday, June 4 with a two-hour workshop. Thereafter, classes will meet regularly every other Tuesday from 4:30-6:30 PM PT / 7:30-9:30 PM ET.

1. EDU 300 – Observation and Assessment of Infants and Toddlers (week A)
2. EDU 303 – Introduction to the Administration of Early Childhood Programs (week B)
3. EDU 307 – Introduction to Working with Young Children: Curriculum, Play, and Pedagogy (week A)
4. EDU 311 – Creative Experiences for Young Children (week B)

*If you choose to do 2 courses, make sure you choose a week A & a week B course. As they will meet on alternate Tuesdays.

Earn a Certificate in Early Childhood Education

Basic Certificate

The Basic Certificate covers the four courses required by the State of California to be an assistant teacher in an early childhood education center. Students are required to take EDU 301, 307, and 313. Students may choose from four options of curriculum/program classes.

  • EDU 301 Child Growth and Development (4 credits)
  • EDU 307 Introduction to Working with Young Children Curriculum, Play, and Pedagogy (4 credits)
  • EDU 313 Partnering with Families and Community (4 credits)
  • One of the following (4 credits each):
    • EDU 309 STEM Education and Experiences
    • EDU 311 Creative Experiences for Young Children
    • EDU 306 Language and Literacy Development in ECE 

Advanced Certificate in ECE Pedagogy and Curriculum

The Advanced Certificate in ECE Pedagogy and Curriculum allows an early childhood educator to specialize in the classroom curriculum, both designing and implementing a variety of subject areas. Students will learn about the indoor/outdoor classroom model, how to promote language and literacy in young children, STEM Education, and creative experiences of music, movement, and art.

  • EDU 314 The Indoor and Outdoor Environments: A Classroom View (4 credits)
  • EDU 306 Language and Literacy Development and Experience for Young Children (4 credits)
  • EDU 309 STEM Education and Experiences (4 credits)
  • EDU 311 Creative Experiences for Young Children

Advanced Certificate in Special Needs in Early Childhood Education

Understanding Special needs in young children is crucial to providing the early intervention necessary to support growth and development. This sequence of courses gives early childhood educators the disposition and tools to recognize and work with those children who exhibit behaviors characteristic of special needs. Students will learn the history and laws related to special education, the various types of special needs, and how to adapt to the needs of children.

  • EDU 315 Child Guidance and Positive Discipline (4 credits)
  • EDU 304 Collaboration and Adaptation for Special Needs in ECE (4 credits)
  • EDU 305  Field  Experience with Special Needs in ECE (2 credits)

Cost per Course
$600.00 with an additional $100.00 to convert the courses into a certificate.
