Art and Light: Symbols of Hope

9:30am - 10:15am

We are all attracted to light! Artists employ light as a symbol of hope, wisdom, divinity and intellectual exploration. Light radiates from a painted candle in works by Caravaggio and Rembrandt. Light pours gently through a window in Vermeer's masterpieces. Contemporary artists such as Dan Flavin, Mary Corse, James Turrell and Olafur Eliasson sculpt space using neon, sunshine, and digital LED installations. What do all of these visionaries tell us about perception and our own humanity? Join John Paul Thornton for this reflective view of art histories.

John Paul Thornton lectures on art and culture around the world, and has also been sharing his insights regularly at AJU. He has been honored by the Department of Cultural Affairs and the United Nations Foundation.
