Event Details
Presented with The Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles Melvyn Werbach will speak about his recently published book, "Sons of the Lion’s Cub: The Horenstein Brothers and Their Fortune." With the aid of an international group of cousins and Ukrainian archival research, he uncovered a fascinating story. In the second half of the 19th Century, two Hasidic brothers, of moderate means, amassed a huge family fortune. These brothers were celebrated in folk tales and even in a Yiddish song. Sholom Aleichem wrote a short story about the family’s annual Hanukkah Festival. How did they become so successful? That tale will be told in this program. Melvyn Werbach is an M.D. and has served on the UCLA Clinical Faculty. A long time member of JGSLA, he is a frequent lecturer and published author. Since retirement from medical practice, his extensive genealogical research has enabled him to reconstruct a rabbinical ancestral line on his father's side that appears traceable back to many of the earliest European rabbinical families.
