Hubertus Czernin played the key role in triggering the public discussion about Waldheim.

What does it take to make a nation reconsider its self image? This question is at the heart of this film which follows the 1986 Austrian presidential campaign of Kurt Waldheim, whose candidacy is plunged into chaos by revelations of his Nazi past.

While rumors of Nazi association emerged during his term as UN Secretary-General, it wasn’t until he sought the presidency that more damning evidence arose: his involvement in the 1942 massacre of Yugoslav partisans and the 1943 deportation of Jews from Salonika.

The film documents the denial by the Austrian political class and the outbreak of anti-Semitism and patriotism, which finally led to his election.

Presented with the Austrian Consulate
