Join us for a biblical archaeology film screening & discussion with From Cairo to the Cloud: The World of the Cairo Geniza.

Post-screening discussion with producer/director Michelle Paymar and Jessica Goldberg, Associate Professor, Near Eastern Languages & Cultures, UCLA.

In 1896, Solomon Schechter entered the sacred storeroom, the geniza, of an ancient Cairo synagogue and discovered a vast collection of manuscripts that revolutionized our understanding of Jewish history. Larger than the Dead Sea Scrolls, the half million fragments of the Geniza open a window into a vanished civilization that illuminates over a thousand years of Jewish, Christian and Muslim life and testifies to a “golden age” of relative religious tolerance nearly unimaginable today.

This film tells of the vital society the Geniza reveals and the efforts of archivists and digital experts to bring these ancient manuscripts into the modern world – to the cloud where it is freely accessible online to everyone, everywhere.
