Event Details
Presented by the Soraya Sarah Nazarian Program in the Fine Arts Anuradha Vikram, Artistic Director, 18th Street Arts Center, will read from and discuss her essay 'Culture, Class, and the New Economy' from her recent book Decolonizing Culture. The essay looks at the changing role of art in society as the place of visual and performing arts in popular life is supplanted by commercial and applied arts such as design, technology, and gaming. Rather than allow the arts to be supplanted by market forces as has happened in the one-time counter-culture mecca of San Francisco, this essay asks how American cities might rethink their values to promote livability and sustainability for all citizens and thereby support and promote the arts within a healthy society.
