David Kipen, editor, in conversation with Stephen Sass, President, Jewish Historical Society

A rich mosaic of diary entries and letters from Marilyn Monroe, Cesar Chavez, Susan Sontag, Albert Einstein, and many more, this collection is the story of Los Angeles as told by locals, transplants, and some just passing through. The author details his search to assemble a kaleidoscopic view of LA from the Spanish missionaries in the 1500s to today.

David Kipen opened the Boyle Heights bookstore and lending library Libros Schmibros in 2010. He is a former literature director of the National Endowment for the Arts, book editor/critic of the San Francisco Chronicle, and contributor to multiple volumes of California cultural history.

Visit Libros Schmibros and historic Boyle Heights with the Jewish Historical Society.

Presented with the Jewish Historical Society of Southern California.
